ERS Head Attends Digitization and Digital Preservation Conference

Sharon Samaniego, Electronic Resource Services (ERS) and concurrent section head of the Serials, and Graduate Studies and Faculty Section attended the two-day conference on, “Digitization and Digital Preservation Initiatives and Best Practices” organized by University of the Philippines Diliman in partnership with the Embassy of Spain last November 14-15, 2019. The conference aimed at addressing the preservation of various materials towards the enrichment of our nation’s culture.

The speakers of the two-day conference presented the challenges encountered by the various institutions and share their best practices as regards how to approach digitization programs in their respective institutions. Moreover, they also provided information on cost-effective means of digitization and available open access repositories. The conference emphasize that digitization is not the end of preservation, hence, safeguarding the value of original work is what librarians, curators, and archivists should be of critical concern.

According to Ms. Samaniego the conference made her realize that as librarian, curator or archivist our role in keeping vital resources to preserve and enrich our country’s history and culture is imperative. (S.M. Samaniego).
