De La Salle Philippines Library Commission or DLSP LC holds Research Seminar for Librarians

The De La Salle Philippines Library Commission (DLSP LC) together with the Philippine Association of School Librarians, Inc. held a two-day seminar-workshop with the theme “Upskilling Librarians’ Research Competency for the Fourth Industrial Revolution” on October 16-17, 2019 at De La Salle College of Saint Benilde.

Attended by 73 librarians from different parts of the country, the seminar-workshop aimed to: 1) understand the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4Th IR) in research; 2) enhance the competencies of librarians in doing scholarly research that are responsive for the 4Th IR library users; 3) help improve services, resources and demonstrate library impact on student success through evidence based practice and research productivity; 4) produce research outputs that can be shared in the next DLSP Libraries Research Conference.

The seminar - workshop started with an opening message of DLSU-D Library Director Mary Ann Salvador, as the chair of this year’s DLSP LC and followed by a Keynote Message from Ms. Marissa Rodriguez, director, Center for Instruction Research and Curriculum, DSL-CSB. Ms. Rodriguez stressed the importance of developing skills to support evidence-based research in response to the issues and opportunities brought by the 4th industrial revolution.

Dr. Violeta Valladolid as the research coordinator of the Institutional Testing and Evaluation Office of De La Salle University formally began the presentation and discussion of the research process. She discussed the different motivations or value of conducting research. She also emphasized and explained in detail the development of the research study which include: the objective, literature review and framework as well as the design and method. Dr. Valladolid moderated the discussion on probing the research questions further and possible research design and methods to be used in answering the questions. The discussions provided a working knowledge to be utilized by the participants as they draft their research concept paper. Since the participants were divided into groups to work on the activity, Dr. Valladolid moved in between groups to check on their progress and to provide guidance. Some of the participants also took the opportunity to consult their individual research projects with Dr. Valladolid. At the end of the day, the groups were asked to present their concept paper while Dr. Valladolid commented on aspects for development or improvement in the proposals.

The second day begun with a review of the research process through gamification. The participants eagerly answered the quiz, which gave them an idea on how library activities could be delivered in a fun and engaging way through interactive game. Ms. Marian Eclevia, Assistant Director for Operations, DLSU Libraries, highlighted the importance of sharing research through different venues such as conference presentation and journal publication. She discussed the guidelines towards effective writing in research and presented Mendeley as a reference management software to aid in writing research and managing sources. She also shared helpful tips in choosing a journal to publish and identified online sources that can be used in research writing and publishing. Attendees participated in the discussion through open forum and exercises. At the end of the day, they were asked to write a structured abstract of their concept paper as a culminating task. The outputs were presented, and Ms. Eclevia provided positive comments as regards development of their abstracts.
